Pharmacist in Charge (PIC)
Location: Boulder, CO (Gunbarrel area)
Job Type: Direct Hire
Schedule: Monday – Friday, 9:30 AM – 6:00 PM MST
Salary: $136,400 – $177,400
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Pharmacist in Charge (PIC) to oversee pharmacy operations, maintain regulatory compliance, and provide leadership to a high-volume pharmacy team. This role is responsible for ensuring compliance with state and federal pharmacy regulations while supporting operational excellence, staff development, workflow optimization, and quality patient care.
The Pharmacist in Charge will serve as the primary compliance leader for the pharmacy while also performing hands-on staff pharmacist responsibilities, including prescription verification and order review. This position works collaboratively with pharmacy leadership to optimize staffing, maintain workflow efficiency, and achieve key operational performance metrics.
Key Responsibilities
Regulatory Compliance & Operations
- Maintain all Board of Pharmacy and regulatory compliance requirements.
- Ensure pharmacy policies, procedures, and workflows align with state and federal regulations.
- Lead quality and regulatory investigations, ensuring corrective actions are completed.
- Maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and professional standards.
- Support continuous process improvement initiatives to enhance operational performance.
Leadership & Staffing
- Provide day-to-day leadership and guidance for the pharmacist team.
- Develop and manage pharmacist schedules to maintain appropriate staffing ratios.
- Coordinate staffing rotations to support production needs and operational efficiency.
- Arrange PRN coverage for weekend and peak production periods.
- Collaborate with pharmacy leadership to optimize pharmacist assignments and workload distribution.
- Observe pharmacist performance and provide coaching, mentorship, and performance feedback.
Pharmacy Operations
- Perform staff pharmacist duties, including:
- Prescription verification
- Order verification
- Final prescription verification
- Additional clinical verification activities as needed
- Support production workflows to ensure timely and accurate prescription fulfillment.
- Balance administrative responsibilities with hands-on pharmacy operations.
Training & Staff Development
- Lead onboarding and training for new pharmacists.
- Develop ongoing education and training initiatives focused on compliance, workflow improvements, and industry best practices.
- Conduct performance evaluations and support professional development.
- Identify skill gaps and implement targeted training programs.
- Encourage continuing education and professional growth opportunities.
Qualifications
Required Education
- Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD)
Licensure
- Current Pharmacist license in the State of California or the ability to obtain California licensure.
- Willingness and ability to obtain additional state pharmacist licenses as required within the first 12–18 months.
- Must be registered or eligible for registration with the applicable State Board of Pharmacy.
Required Experience
- Minimum 3 years of management experience leading pharmacists and/or pharmacy technicians in a clinical, pharmacy operations, or contact center environment.
- Minimum 5 years of experience leading pharmacy teams and achieving operational performance goals.
- Demonstrated success maintaining Board of Pharmacy and regulatory compliance.
- Experience in high-volume pharmacy operations preferred.
- Strong background in quality improvement, operations management, and team development.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of state and federal pharmacy regulations, including HIPAA and Fraud, Waste & Abuse.
- Strong leadership, coaching, and team-building abilities.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong analytical thinking and clinical decision-making skills.
- Experience with workflow optimization and performance metrics (KPIs).
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and pharmacy management software.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent problem-solving, conflict resolution, and project management abilities.
- High attention to detail and commitment to quality and patient safety.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, hear, see, and communicate effectively throughout the workday.
- Ability to travel between assigned pharmacy locations as needed.
- Flexibility to work extended hours when business needs require.
